8 days Mount Kilimanjaro Western Breach Trekking Itinerary, which provides good acclimatization and is one of the preferred ways to tackle this challenging route.
Note: The Western Breach is a demanding, high-altitude route intended for experienced trekkers with good fitness. Route availability may change depending on safety assessments by the park authorities and current mountain conditions, so it should always be confirmed before booking.
Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp
Registration at Londorossi Gate.
Short drive to the trailhead.
Trek through lush montane rainforest.
Overnight at Mti Mkubwa Camp.
Distance: 6–7 km
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira 1 Camp
Steady climb through heath and moorland.
Reach the expansive Shira Plateau.
Excellent views of Kibo Peak.
Distance: 8 km
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp – Moir Hut
Cross the Shira Plateau.
Optional acclimatization hike.
Overnight at Moir Hut (4,200m).
Distance: 11 km
Day 4: Moir Hut – Lava Tower Camp
Gradual ascent through alpine desert.
Afternoon acclimatization around Lava Tower.
Distance: 6 km
Day 5: Lava Tower – Arrow Glacier Camp
Short but steep hike.
Rest and prepare for the technical ascent.
Early dinner and overnight.
Distance: 5 km
Day 6: Arrow Glacier – Crater Camp
Early morning departure (around 5:00 AM).
Ascend the Western Breach via steep rock and scree.
Helmets are commonly used because of rockfall risk.
Arrive at Crater Camp beside Furtwängler Glacier.
Optional visit to the Ash Pit.
Distance: 7–8 km
Day 7: Crater Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp (Summit Day)
Early morning summit attempt.
Reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) shortly after sunrise.
Descend via Stella Point, Barafu, and Millennium to Mweka Camp.
Distance: Approximately 18 km
Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate
Descend through rainforest.
Receive summit certificates.
Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.
